Vaccinations Q & A

by Vlad Nusinovich, MD

Why are vaccinations important for my health?

Vaccinations help provide additional immunity against certain types of diseases so you can avoid becoming sick. Your body produces some antibodies to fight disease, but in other cases, it needs a little help. Vaccines provide that help by encouraging the body to produce its own antibodies to ward off specific diseases. Without vaccinations, you can contract serious illnesses like measles or hepatitis.

How can I tell what vaccinations I need?

Dr. Nusinovich will review your health records and medical history to determine which vaccinations you might be missing, then he can make recommendations based on your lifestyle, your health, your age and other factors. Some vaccinations have been developed specifically for adults, and in other cases, you may need “booster” shots to help ensure a previous vaccination remains effective. Tetanus is an example of a vaccination that requires regular “updates” to remain effective. In some cases, your job, school or sports team may require specific vaccinations which will usually be indicated on a special form. In other cases, international travel to some countries may require you to have certain types of vaccinations to keep you healthy and prevent you from bringing diseases back with you.

Can I get sick from having a vaccination?

No, vaccinations will not make you sick. Some vaccinations may contain a very tiny amount of live virus to stimulate your body to produce antibodies that can protect it from the disease, but they do not contain enough of the virus to actually make you sick. You may, however, experience some aches or slight fever as you body begins to make those antibodies, but those effects will last only a day or two, and many people experience no effects at all. You may also experience some slight swelling or redness at the site of the vaccination.
